Brett Ellis is a guitar wizard. Accompanied by the able talents of Rick Nash (bass) and Calvin Lakin (drums), these guys deliver a live show that competes with the best live albums of yesteryear, like those by the Who, Cream, and Hendrix. And speaking of Jimi, Ellis’s version of ‘Freedom’ — the only cover on a CD of originals — is a clear highpoint, with Ellis channelling Hendrix with his considerable chops and feeling. If you like intense, heavy and guitar-centered virtuoso rock music, this one’s for you. Listen until your ears drop off and, if you actually get what’s being played here, you’ll beg for a new set of ears and start all over again. Highly recommended.

With a gaggle of albums to his name, guitar master Brett Ellis and his Band have decided to hit the stage and get Electrified Live! And no wonder, for this fifteen track live monster positively crackles with energy. Ellis coaxing and cajoling his guitar into submission through a passionate display that has you kicking yourself that you weren't at the Navajo Live in San Diego when this album was recorded in June 2015.

Any live show should hit the ground running, hence "Keeping The Rock Alive" - a song that name-checks the label in question here, Grooveyard Records, for doing exactly as the songs says – was made for this setting. Powering and passionate, Ellis, along with drummer Calvin Lakin and bassist Rick Nash know how to lay it down thick, build the intensity and then drive their message home through the Hendrix like, with its "Crosstown Traffic" 'doo-doo-doo-doo-dooo-doooooo' tip of the hat, "Freedom" being the purely liberating experience its name suggests. "Empty Bottle" then plays to Ellis's Blues strengths, bringing the vibe in close and claustrophobic, before "Angel" ramps up the energy once more.

Hendrix remains a constant touching point, hut then so does Robin Trower and Frank Marino, a truly authentic style then given a hefty hoof up the jacksy through an injection of heavy rockin' power. Ellis may not be the most naturally gifted singer, his voice not quite possessing the clarity a vocal specialist might give. However what he does provide is a heartfelt delivery that brings the songs to life in a way the best vocalists out there would struggle to match. Something which "Nine Tons Of Soul" benefits from hugely. "Make It Rain" takes things down a different path, a Richie Blackmore infused guitar intro making way for something a little Deep Purple like, well if Deep Purple had been born in heavy rocking blues territory that is. While for "20 in 5", Nash and Larkin are both invited front and centre for classy, short solo sections where neither waste one single second. However when the trio get together to power the show to its conclusion, "End Of Tears" and "Crazy Wild Child" sure as hell take no prisoners.

I'm not sure there's another single style of music that thrives in the live setting quite as strongly as hard hitting blues rock. So plug in and get set for the blues-shock of Electrified Live!

American blues rocker Brett Ellis comes alive. Well, he sure as hell rocks it out live! He kicks off at full throttle with Keeping The Rock Alive and he doesn’t look back! Backed up by bass player Rick Nash and drummer Calvin Lakin they are kickin’ asses and taking names! Brett is an outstanding guitarist on his studio albums, but DAMN this cat is on fire live!! His rendition of Hendrix’s Freedom is nothing short of outstanding. 20 In 5 is a cool chunky rocker that actually reminds me a bit of Van Halen’s Little Dreamer in the verse, but there end the similarities. The fat chorus riff is powerful and nice and the song also showcases the talents of Rick and Calvin since they get their solo pieces as well. Brett lands on the heavy side of blues rock, so if you’re into guys like Lance Lopez, Michael Katon, Poppa Chubby and Philip Sayce, check this cat out. You won’t be disappointed! What I really love about Brett’s guitar playing is that he knows all his blues licks, but he mixes them up with brutal technical licks, some jazzy runs and a variety of other styles making it all into a nice mix of his own, plus his tone and sound is killer. As for Brett’s vocals, they may not live up to his guitar playing. However, like with Gary Moore, Pat Travers, Michael Katon and Hendrix himself, they weren’t great singers, but they had the right attitude, which Brett sure has. Plus, he actually reminds me a bit of Ted Nugent in his early days, which isn’t bad at all (even if I don’t share the Nuge’s… views and Brett is a far better guitar player).

'Electrified Live', the highly anticipated debut LIVE release from the Brett Ellis Band is 100 % pure blues rock fury unleashed! Brett Ellis on vocals and guitar, Rick Nash in bass and Calvin Lakin on drums. What this power blues rock trio have created here is is a blues/rock guitar-driven 4th degree assault on your ears. If you are looking for something to brush the cobwebs out of your skull, this bad boy will do the trick. From the opening slew of licks to the last note, this live performance is top-notch. Players like Brett Ellis show that the blues is by no means dead, and he proves it in this performance. This man is more then just a guitar player that plays fast, he is an emotional guitar player, that plays with feeling, and he might play fast, but it sounds good, and has feeling. I tend to like the uptempo rock blues numbers best: here my favorite, "Keeping The Rock Alive", "Stone Cold Killer", the bluesy, "Empty Bottle", "Angel", "My Own Way". The set has something for everyone. There's even a smoking cover of Jimi Hendrix's classic ,"Freedom". To anyone who says the blues are boring, let this album be a lesson to them. Who says you can't shred the blues, anyway? - Highly Recommended.
