Outstanding 12th studio disc by this awesome blues/rock guitarist from Iowa featuring 10 songs of excellent, dynamic, soul-powered, blues-based, retro-fied, six string mojo that stands tall & lands solid between a rock and a blues place. Bryce Janey is the real deal: an authentic, bad-ass, Stratmaster guitar slinger with way-kool, whiskey-soaked vocals who will rock your damn blues away.

On "Blue Moon Rising", Bryce Janey turns up the "Janey Juice" and takes us on an awesome musical ride with his guitar fueled, power trio mojo train that rocks solid with pure "down home" certfied blues power deep into the night featuring Dan Johnson on bass & Eric Douglas on drums. Complete with strong memorable songs that define bluesy excellence, "Bad Moon Rising" is an essential blues rockin' heavy guitar disc from Grooveyard Records that is highly recommended to fans of Robin Trower, Billy Gibbons & ZZ Top, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, SRV, Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Duarte, Jeff Healey, Walter Trout, Craig Erickson, Dirty Dave Osti, Tony Spinner, Chris Aaron, Buddaheads, The Janeys and to the good people who dig all the previous, excellent Bryce Janey discs.

This is Bryce’s thirteenth album (if I counted correctly) and it’s a cool, guitar-heavy blues rock affair. Bryce has a cool, raspy blues rock voice that fits the style perfectly. At times he reminds me a bit of mix between Michael Katon and Danny Joe Brown. The songs are always gritty and (positively) nasty. There are also some really low down and dirty rockers, like the excellent “Blue Moon Rising”. There’s also a funky vibe that sneaks into songs like “Pain In My Heart” and “Lonesome Train”. If you’re into guitar-based blues rock with a southern touch “Blue Moon Rising” is well worth checking out!

Janne Stark / Stark Music Reviews (December 2022)

Bryce Janey from Iowa delivers his twelfth studio album in his solo career with 'Blue Moon Rising'. A career that started in 1995 when he decided to come out under the wing of The Janeys (the band he was in with his father and mother) and stand on his own two feet. The album is the successor of the 2018 'Brand New Day' and opens nicely with the ripping guitar lick that gives Back In The Day something dirty on top of the already great rocking song. The gentlemen are very good at rocking that fine and the tandem of Dan “DJ” Johnson and Eric Douglas on bass and drums respectively is one that knows what to do. The solos Bryce conjures up from his Strat are raw and tasteful at the same time. It is a line that is very constantly extended over the rest of the nine songs on the album, just over fifty minutes of well-cared-for blues rock.

Recording took place earlier this year at Southwest Studios under the direction of Bryce Janey himself and producer Joe Romagnola , with Janey taking care of the mixing and mastering alone. Nowhere does the sound sound smeared and all parties come into their own. For lovers of the better bass work this has become a wonderful album because what Dan “DJ” Johnson conjures from his bass guitar here is of a very high level. That may not be very surprising given his reputation and impressive career, but on a guitar-driven record like this that doesn't mean it should go unmentioned.

All in all, 'Blue Moon Rising' has become an album that fans of Bryce Janey love to hear. With now twelve records on the counter, that alone is an achievement.
