‘Freak the Jones’ is unique — that’s for sure. And yet they offer up the standard, well-worn power trio format to the hilt, complementing the best in the original power trios of yesteryear, if adding their own special something. That special thing is the original material, which flows through the CD like a river of rock, making even the seasoned rock connoisseur stand up and take notice. There is one exception: “Have a Cigar,” by Pink Floyd. That’s the one cover on this disc. But lo and behold: In my humble opinion, they perform the tune better than Pink Floyd, or at least they infuse it with new life, giving it a bluesy feel and a powerhouse virtuosity that was lacking in the original. Ira Camp shows a familiarity with his instrument (guitar) that can only come from years of playing — he’s at the top of his game. And his superlative guitar playing is excellently augmented by Ben Hernandez on bass and vocals, who gives the band a distinct sound. Add to that Sandy Sattler on drums, and you have an intense display of raunchy [power trio rock the likes of which one doesn’t see, er, hear, too often these days. There’s a bit of Zappa-esque humor in this music, but it grabs the ears more like Zeppelin than Zappa. In the end, it’s Freak the Jones and no one else. Period.

Grooveyard Records has done it again! This is a re-release of an early 2000’s album or albums as the expanded addition include the bands first album Ohm. What a treat this album is. Lively funky rock. A rocking good collection of songs that will put a smile on your face. I was more than pleasantly surprised at how good this album is. They have their own sound so it's hard to say a comparison to anyone. Some excellent musicianship. Love the guitar and the vocals. So if you are wondering if this is a good pick up, then yes! If you like good rock music, you can't go wrong with the Freak !
