Mike Onesko is one of those rare, unsung heroes of rock and roll. Guitarist (and producer) of the Blindside Blues Band, he has stacked up an impressive array of 24 records and compilations. In The Name of Rock n’ Roll features 10 tracks of axe-grinding, guitar-fueled heavy rock straight out of the ‘70s songbook. With influences that range from Pat Travers, Ted Nugent and Leslie West, Mike Onesko’s Guitar Army is a galeforce of meaty riffs and pounding rhythms. Recruiting bassist Mark Kingen and drummer John Warmouth (Steelwind), Onesko has revitalized the classic blues-rock power trio. Opening track “The Destroyer” takes a sound bite from a Saturday matinee ‘creature feature’ to lead a furious run at speed metal. Racer X singer Jeff Martin lends his voice while guest guitarist Bruce Bouillet (Racer X, The Scream) shreds away like a six-string madman. Still boiling with volcanic energy, the band later continue to harness the same frantic display as they erupt into “Speed Freak”.

Balancing out guitar wizardry with tons of tone and amplified heat, the trio lock into a groove with title track “In The Name of Rock N’ Roll”. The throbbing drumbeat collides with a Judas Priest-like chord progression building into a hook chorus. Onesko holds nothing back as he growls out the lyrics over a barrage of guitars. “Sacred Sun”, “Keep the Flame Alive” and “Nothing Can Hold Me Down” are almost tribal in the delivery. Stirring up dust and dirt with a rawness found only in those willing to sweat it out for their musical addiction gives the tracks true authenticity. A few big names lend a lick or two throughout the disc. Dirty Dave Osti, Martin J. Andersen, Janne Stark, Jay Jesse Johnson and Craig Erickson are just some of the heavy hitters. Personal favorites are “Warzone (Dogs of Doom)” with its turbo-charged nod the Deep Purple and the incredibly melodic “Child of the Sky” which is dedicated to the late great Ronnie Montrose and features the outstanding lead guitar work of Doug Rappoport (Edgar Winter). Also worth checking out is the band’s cover of Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times”. A monster classic!

The mission is Rock & Roll, their ringleader's Mike Onesko, and his weapons are not only the legendary six strings, but also a number of renowned guitarists who know precisely how to use those strings. In the new release of Mike Onesko's Guitar Army, illustrious names like Bruce Bouillet, Craig Erickson, Brett Ellis and the seemingly tireless Martin J. Andersen brave their dangerous mission successfully - and in the ten tracks from "In The Name Of Rock n 'Roll" each proves up to the name and that they belong in this company.

The material is extremely groovy, sometimes provided with little sway gen Blues, mainly very lively and extroverted. The guitarists use their leeway, but can also easily be subordinated to the individual compositions, which especially is appealing and then forced up a gear. 'Speed Freak' and 'Can't Make You Love Me', consequently, are also among the highlights of this disc, because they escape the classic mid-tempo groove and embody the dirty side of the GUITAR ARMY.

But the bluesy numbers ('Warzone') and the classic rock sections ('Nothing Can Hold Me Down') are more than just mandatory exercises. The passion that brought Onesko and his companions to this project is palpable, the songs also so consistently strong. Because it leaves out any unnecessary fiddling and because "In The Name Of Rock n 'Roll" also has a lot of variety to offer, I say thumbs up. My dream now would be a live gig with this line-up, but we may rejoice on this disc in the meantime.

Recent weeks have seen me once again wax lyrical about the latest releases from Grooveyard Records – and with good reason, for they've been universally excellent and In The Name Of Rock N Roll, the latest release from Mike Onesko's Guitar Army, is no different! If you don't already know, Onesko is one of the main protagonists in Blindside Blues Band, his six string a serious weapon in that outfit's armoury. For his Guitar Army, Mike takes that skill and marries it to that of some of tastiest six string slingers in town, the guest list including Bruce Bouillet (Racer X), Brett Ellis, Dirty Dave Osti, Martin J. Andersen (Blindstone), Janne Stark (Mountain Of Power), Jay Jesse Johnson, Craig Erickson and Doug Rappoport! As if that wasn't enough, Jeff Martin (Badlands/Racer X) also makes a couple of appearances behind the mic, his mighty voice adding authority to the already imposing riffs of "Destroyer" and "Sacred Sun"; the former (once an excellent b movie intro has played out) a joyous outburst of riffology, the latter a mid paced bruiser which muscles its way into your mind and refuses to relinquish residency. As you'd expect with this line-up, the guitar solos come thick, fast and for the throat, the assembled cast unleashing their varied bags of tricks with a precision guest-laden releases are seldom blessed with, each of the tracks a guitar lover's delight. If you don't believe me, simply dip into the instrumental "Warzone (Dogs Of Doom)" where you get to discover what Joe Satriani would sound like if he were deeper steeped in heavy rocking blues, while it comes as no surprise that "Speed Freak" fires out a quick succession of six string sideswipes. Although some of the best work is kept for the superb album closing tribute to the much missed Ronnie Montrose, "Child Of The Sky".

Throughout, Onesko also reveals a mighty set of lungs, his voice powering through consistently in a way which reminds of a more carefree Rick Medlocke (Blackfoot), his charismatic approach really hitting home on the album's title cut and "Keeping The Flame Alive". Special mention also has to go out to bassist Mark Kingen and drummer John Warmouth, as the pair provide their illustrious album mates the solid, sparky foundations from which their pyrotechnics really let fly. While guests Paul Alvarez (bass), Mike Stefanski and Scott Turner (both on keyboards) also give an impressive account of themselves.

It's easy to recommend this album to guitar aficionados and yet, what makes In The Name Of Rock N Roll so irresistible, is that its charms go much, much deeper than that. For, while the musicianship on this album is top notch, what really makes Mike Onesko's Guitar Army the mighty force they are, is the collection of superb songs they get to shine on – and even the cover of "Good Times Bad Times" hits the heights – and how many Zep reworks can you say that about? I'll wager if you give Mike Onesko's Guitar Army a chance to impress, you'll be begging the Grooveyard to bring in conscription! Sign me up!

As if Mike Onesko's superb guitar-playing isn't enough, "In the Name of Rock 'N Roll" offers collaborations with some of the finest six-string virtuosos in the business. Bruce Bouillet, Brett Ellis, Dirty Dave Osti, Martin J. Andersen, Janne Stark, Jay Jesse Johnson, Craig Erickson and Doug Rappoport grace this disc while at the top of their game, taking Onesko's hard rock/ blues vibe to ever higher levels of sonic delectability. Not that the Guitar Army really needs any help...the band smokes from start to finish, with tasty material that is sure to please all fans of juicy guitar rock. Especially noteworthy on this disc is the vocal contribution by Jeff Martin and the elaborate tribute to the late Ronnie Montrose, "Child of the Sky", which is clearly a musical masterpiece. Even if you think you've had your fill of dynamite guitar records, this one is not to be missed!

Blindside Blues Band frontman/guitarist, Mike Onesko has assembled his powerhouse Guitar Army on his latest release, 'In The Name Of Rock N' Roll'. Enlisting a group of six string samurais of the highest order! Bruce Bouillet (Racer X), Brett Ellis, Dirty Dave Osti, Martin J. Andersen (Blindstone), Janne Stark (Mountain Of Power), Jay Jesse Johnson (B.B.B.), Craig Erickson & Doug Rappoport (Edgar Winter). Take it from me, this could easily set the record for dangerous shred pyrotechnics! A total must for the shred feind yes sir! Every song is done with such feeling and energy that you can tell they had a blast making this. From the get go with, "The Destroyer, featuring Jeff Martin (Badlands) on vocals and Bruce Bouillet (Racer X) on guitar. "In the Name of Rock N' Roll" (featuring Brett Ellis) is simply amazing. It's obvious Mike Onesko and his league of extraordinary axemen are taking no prisoners! The six string assault continues with, "Keeping The Flame Alive" (featuring Dirty Dave Osti), "Nothing Can Hold Me Down"(featuring Martin J. Andersen), and "Warzone (Dogs of Doom)" (featuring Janne Stark). Mike Onesko handles the vocals on a killer cover of the Zeppelin classic, "Good Times, Bad Times" showing that he isn't just a player, he's quite a singer. "Speed Freak" (featuring Brett Ellis) and "Can't Make You Love Me" (featuring Craig Erickson) are other smoking examples of intensity displayed throughout this amazing album. Closing out the album is, "Child Of The Sky" (featuring Doug Rappoport), a touching heartfelt ode to the late Ronnie Montrose. What Mike Onesko has delivered with this recording is a tight set of blues rock music performed by some the hottest guitar players on the planet each creating masterpieces of sound. Highly recommended to anyone that appreciates fine guitar work and has a love for the Blues.
- Highly Recommended.

This is one MEGA AWESOME album on the Grooveyard Records label from start to finish from Mike Onesko and his Army of SERIOUS Guitar Talent, including himself, Bruce Bouillet, Brett Ellis, Dirty Dave Osti, Martin J Andersen, Janne Stark, Jay Jesse Johnson, Doug Rappoport & Craig Erickson. All these guys provide massive riffs, scorching lead and a wave of pounding power that make this album a delight to the ears and also a MUST OWN !! Mike's vocals are superb and some of his best IMO, and you also have the vocal talent of Jeff Martin (Badlands) leading the way with the opening track "The Destroyer" and, being a massive Bad Company fan, I just love "Keeping The Flame Alive" with it's "Feel Like Making Love" inspired riff, powering through this KILLER tune. Again, Mike and the boys, with Jay Jesse Johnson also on six string duties, nail another Led Zeppelin cover, "Good Times Bad Times," and give it the respect that the classic song demands !! The last track on the album, "Child Of The Sky," is a song dedicated to the late Ronnie Montrose and Mike and the band absolutely nail this. It is that good, I have no problem anointing this, an instant CLASSIC song. There is not one dud track on this album and I could seriously go through every track on the album and give you a review on how good each one is and the brilliant work and talent of all the guests who play on it but we would be here for ages.... So in a nutshell, with every song and the playing on it, the quality is seriously top shelf stuff !! I don't know much about the Drummer "John Warmouth" but HOLY SHIT, where has he been hiding ?? This guy delivers a massive sound and his playing just simply KICKS ASS !! Mark Kingen on Bass also delivers the goods big time and along with John, they lay the ultimate foundation for these talented six string axemen to run rampant..... and they certainly do !! Also a mention to the other guests on the project, Paul Alvarez (bass), Mike Stefanski and Scott Turner (both on keyboards) who also give an impressive account of themselves. My good friend Mike Onesko and every guest who played on this, the Grooveyard Label and its owner Joe Romagnola, should be very proud of this album - BRILLIANT ALBUM.... PERIOD !!
