Children of Aegean - Caryatis

· reviews ·

Instrumental expedition into Greek mythology.

This company was launched last year by the two Greek musicians Stavros Papadopoulos and Panagiotis Zabourlis. The two are known as busy and busy characters and impressively prove this with "Mythologica". So they not only shared the writing of the songs, but also the guitar work on this album and didn't have to ask for the help of another colleague for the recordings. Since this is an instrumental album, there was no need to worry about vocals anyway. Stavros is responsible for bass, drums and keyboards, and for the accentuated Greek lute Panagiotis.

As the name of the company and the album title suggest, the two musicians refer to their origins and were without exception inspired by the myths of their homeland for the ten tracks. The result is an atmospherically dense album that has been given a "common thread" not only because of the fact that CHILDREN OF AEGEAN manages without vocals. The selection of the themes, more precisely the song title, shows such a thing, even if it is musically varied and variable.

For the opener 'Sisyphus' it could have been a little more exhausting for the listener, to illustrate its proverbial, arduous work, but the prelude with a subtle psychedelic list and based on heavy stoner riffs is definitely captivating. The titles often evoke the appropriate associations only after several iterations (and admittedly a short research into what you are actually dealing with), but in the end "Mythologica" proves to be a very captivating excursion into the world of ancient Greek mythology.

Thanks to the sensitivity of the two musicians to the appropriate arrangements, they repeatedly succeed in making the listener listen to their songs with such fascination over the course of the season that the corresponding film role plays in the head cinema. From a purely musical point of view, the guitar work of the two colleagues clearly stands out. This represents a very solid, sometimes surprisingly hard rocking base and also allows the improvisational skills of the two protagonists appropriate freedom. As a result, there are always corresponding phrases that are sufficient for the respective title.

For example, 'Morpheus', the god of dreams, was given fantastically beautiful prog quotes embedded in a full hard rock reef corset. The Cycladic island 'Delos', on the other hand, is dedicated to a blues-infiltrated psychedelic rocker who has added a touch of local folklore. CHILDREN OF AEGEAN provides a special flair with the transfigured seeming 'Nyphm' built around a romantic guitar theme, as well as with the sensitive 'Penelope’s Loom', sometimes only performed on acoustic guitars.

With the homage to 'Pythia' the musical excursion to "Mythological" ends in a beguiling way. With repetitive basic riffs, the trance-like state is modeled in which the 'Pythia', the prophesying high priestess in the oracle of Delphi had to be before she could make her prophecies. Impressive.

Zorba the Papadopoulos? Although Greece is written all over this disc, as is his love for his homeland, it ain’t no world music CD, and that’s for sure. There is a certain amount of Greek ethnicity to it, no doubt, but you won’t find too much lira and laouto, nor will you find tambouras, gaida, daouli, or violi. No. This is a heavy guitar CD, even if it has classical and jazz elements as well. Yeah, and a wee bit of ethnic world-music, too. But overall, Stravos emerges like a Greek incarnation of Joe Satriani, complete with incomparable six-string virtuosity. Given his able guitar assistant, Panagiotis Zabourlis, who composed three of the ten tracks, all original, Papadopoulos creates miracles. Expertly playing all of the instruments himself, minus second guitar and lute, he is a phenomenon of the modern music industry, able to leap the world’s tallest guitarists in a single bound. “Children of Aegean” may be his most daring CD yet. Take the Odyssey and have your mind blown — Greek style.
