The Gugun Power Trio's premier release, "Far East Blues Experience," rocks from start to finish. It's a CD that virtually defines heavy, groove-laiden blues-rock, with its focus squarely on blues guitar virtuosity. The CD is comprised of all original material, but the band does not neglect their prestigious predecessors -- one can hear obvious influences from Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Although long famous in Indonesia, their time has finally come: Sounds like this, blending Far East sensibility with good old fashioned blues guitar nectar, deserve to be heard worldwide. What we have here is a dynamic, virtuosic wall of sound, replete with a refined sense of melody, sophisticated chordal arrangements, and kick-em-in-the-face rock-n-roll.

Indonesia??!!! Holy crap, I don't think I've ever even heard of any rockers from Indonesia! Japan, China, North Korea and even Singapore, but never Indonesia. Well, there's a first for everything. I must say if I didn't know I'd never have guessed it. The far east musicians often have a special touch, at least to their vocals. Gugun, however, sounds perfectly westernized. Well, sounding westernized is no proof of quality, however. I'm therefore happy to say, Gugun passes my quality approval test flying colours! This is no holds barred, guitar driven, balls out blues rock leaning on the heritage of Hendrix, Vaughan, Gallagher and Bolin. Gugun is a outstanding player with a great tone, outstanding feeling and great technique. I really love his style of playing, even though it may not bring anything new and revolutionary. If you've got IT, you don't need to. He's got a solid, great pair of backing musicians in bass player Jono and drummer Bowie that really bring the goods. "Turn It On" is a prime example of a power trio working in perfect unison, with a guitarist rocking it out and a rhythm unit filling up every crack and crevice. Awesome stuff indeed! Gugun has really succeeded in bringing up a classic genre and giving it a new spin, writing songs that rejuvenates the legacy of the aforementioned kings. I truly LOVE the way he grooves in songs like "Fallin' Down". It's impossible to sit still on your arse. This rocks, big time! Gugun is also a very fitting singer for this genre. Great bluesy vibe and the perfect roughness. I can't find any bad tracks whatsoever on this album. It's solid as a rock from start to finish. It also has a nice blend of various styles within the blues rock territory, from the funky vibe of "Spinnin' Around Me" and "Emptiness" to the "Little Wing" style softness of "Holding On", the Stevie Ray:esque "Move On" to the raw heavy jams of "White Dog Jam". A highly recommended gem!

From the other side of the world, from the distant land of Indonesia, comes Gugun and his Power Trio. Indonesia, you say? From this unlikely location comes an authentic gypsy voodoo axe master, and if there's one thing that Far East Blues Experience proves, it's the universality of the power of timeless music. Gugun and his band of brothers prove there are no cultural or geographic boundaries when it comes to the singular language that only music can speak.

Indonesia is officially categorized as a third world country, and a place not known for its promotion of freedom of expression. Life is hard.. you have to be a fighter to survive. Armed with a lefty Strat strung righty, Gugun holds court with a stinging attack and a righteous vibe, channeling the best Hendrixian tones and feels this side of the International Date Line. That said, Gugun Power Trio is anything but some cheap import or wannabees on parade.. this is powerful stuff. It's genuine.. it's vital.. it's everything they are. It's as real as it gets.

A track by track blow by blow would almost diminish the essential message embodied in each track, which is this: irrespective of groove, feel and tempo, there's a raging fire you can hear and a life spirit you can feel in these tracks that is forged from within the oppressive reality these guys wake up to every day. In a certain sense, their music is their entire existence.. their reason for living. Listen to this CD. You'll hear it. You'll feel it.

In a world searching for real meaning -- in this case, real music played by real people for a real reason -- it doesn't get any more "real" than this.
