GUITAR PETE: "Mama Whiskey" (promo video)

· reviews ·

It is exactly the arrival of a blues rock work like “Mad Dog of Hell”. Southpaw guitarist Peter Brasino, aka Guitar Pete, released two albums in the 80's with his band AX ATTACK, a man who left a mark on the hard rock scene. The 7th total since turning to the blues world after the dissolution. It sounds like ZZ Top-esque boogie and Southern rock-esque blues can be heard with Hendrix-Frank Marino-esque techniques, but the sound and momentum of the guitar are all ferocious, and it seems that the Strat can be used with Fender-style amps and distortion. Run at full speed with sound. One piece that raises body temperature!

Since ZZ Top has unfortunately come to an end due to the death of bassist Dusty Hill, there is a boogie space that needs to be filled quickly. And I have a great candidate! Guitar Pete! In other words, guitarist-singer Pete Brasino. This American artist has already released albums with Guitar Pete's Ax Attack and Snakeyed Sue. And now he comes with an album under the Guitar Pete banner. And you really won't be given any rest on this album because Guitar Pete and his anonymous accompanists just keep on raging!

After a number of engines spew out through Pete's guitar, the incredibly tasty and unwieldy blues rock boogie "Asphalt Outlaws" opens, mixing the energy of ZZ Top with the volume of Leslie West's Mountain. The influence of ZZ Top is clearly present in "Naked Ladies & Alcohol". A heavenly combination for many in a funky grooving song. "Stitches" is a mercilessly hard blues rock boogie with screaming and biting guitar work and Pete's growling vocals. "Parts Unknown" starts with an acoustic intro, which is quickly crushed by rock solid boogie. "Lost My Mind (Quarantined)" initially starts as a relaxed atmospheric song with J.J. Cale traits, but it soon turns out to be a fiery blues rocker here. "Rollin' In" is a blistering abrasive boogie, followed by the Tush-esque "Mama Whiskey". In "Hellhound Boogie" some Status Quo influences are added to the instrumental soggy boogie. "Gonna Dump That Chick" has the necessary Boom Boom Boom influences mixed with poisonous angular stomping boogie sounds. An outrageously frantic number! After a thunderstorm intro, Pete closes the album with the dark "It Rained For Daze" in which you can find Fleetwood Mac influences.

This album by Guitar Pete is an absolute must for lovers of rock hard blues rock boogie!

Autumn will be hot when it comes to Guitar Pete and his album "Hellhound Boogie". Recorded in a power trio, "Hellbound Train" was released in mid-October 2021. Bass player Mitchell Hoffman and Anthony 'The Beast' Bernardo (drums) play alongside Guitar Pete Brasino. The protagonist personally produced the ten songs. Joe Romagnola (also Tony Spinner, Bluestone Company, Mountain Of Power, Bryce Janey) is named as "Executive Producer".

The album was mastered by Stavros Papadopoulos at Mojotone Mastering, Greece. He's not a stranger either, as he plays at Super Vintage, Revolution Highway or Freerock Saints. The heavy blues rock hits are all penned by Guitar Pete Brasino. There are over fifty-four minutes on the time iron when the last notes of "It Rained For Daze" fade into the distance.

If it says boogie, there is also boogie inside. Guitar Pete & Co. do not indulge the 12-bar offshoot in an alibi function. The soothing intensity crystallizes out as a trademark of Guitar Pete. That's how he likes it and the people in front of the speakers benefit from it. The boogie is the fire in the hut.

No, you won't find another musician inside the digipak. As a result, I would like to thank the studio technicians that the band leader can play the guitar as a duo, so to speak. There's not just one situation where Guitar Pete uses overdubbing to add more guitar pressure. Not exaggerated, such moments enrich the musical output.

In contrast to Mike Onesko or his Blindside Blues Band, Guitar Pete only very rarely scratches the limit of over-revving, the - from my point of view - intolerance of the heavy blues rock. Changes in tempo, breaks or other rhythms ensure variety within the numbers. There is no real blues ballad in the sense of slow blues on "Hellbound Boogie". However, with a little benevolence and considering the music delivered, the Guitar Pete weather report "It Rained For Daze" can be viewed as a slower track. The trio is screwing itself down from its dynamic heights. With the exception of a few Guitar Pete solo accents, you are near the top of the field. "From Parts Unknown" is definitely the high-flyer boogie with a twin sound.

"Hellhound Boogie" is something like a street sweeper who, like a tornado, blows all dust off the asphalt ("Asphalt Outlaw") and the curb. All heavy blues rock folks will enjoy this Guitar Pete album. However, people who are not entirely averse to blues rock with steam should try "Hellbound Boogie".

Another guitar slinger on the American label GROOVEYARD RECORDS is GUITAR PETE from New York City. 10 songs are on the new CD Hellhound Boogie of this excellent guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer, who is actually called PETE BRASINO. Other involved musicians are bassist MITCHELL HOFFMAN and drummer ANTHONY BERNARDO. Together they deliver a superb classic boogie heavy blues rock that sounds like a mix between ZZ TOP and SEASICK STEVE, with a lot of superb shredding guitarwork from Pete. From start to finish this raw sounding album delivers a dusty barroom boogie heavy blues rocksound at it’s very best, with many highlights, such as Asphalt Outlaws, the superb sensational From Parts Unknown, Hellhound Boogie and the relaxing closing track It Rained For Daze. Make sure to check out this lovely album if you’re a fan of especially ZZ TOP, SEASICK STEVE, BILLY F GIBBONS, WALTER TROUT, etc.

It's been too long. 8 years since his last album. I have surely missed new music from Pete. If you're not familiar Guitar Pete plays the blues and rock like a barroom brawler. Loud and heavy. And his rhythm section of Mitchell Hoffman on bass and Anthony "The Beast" Bernardo gives the dirty heavy guitar the down low bottom it deserves. Always rockin' a good groove. This album a little more blues foundation over all. But not losing any of the heavy rock stylings. And he is not just a one trick heavy riff machine. He can solo with skill with the best of them. Guitar Pete is one of my personal favorites in the blues rock genre. You dont see much about him as you would expect. Perhaps he is too heavy for the blues world. And a little bluesy for the hard rock world. For me he hits the musical bullseye. If you love some hard and heavy blues you need to check this album out .Also the artwork by Nyxian:Drift is amazing and the album cover catches the essence for sure.
