Tony Rondini can play the blues. This guy is clearly an unsung guitar hero. The CD ‘No Use for the Blues’ carries a title with interesting irony. On the one hand, it is blues disk, plain and simple — so clearly he has use for the blues. But the irony goes further: Even though it is a blues disk, it is shot through with variety and goes so far beyond the traditional 12-bar blues scenario. Thus, I can see why he says, ‘No use for the blues.’ In other words, he is reinterpreting the blues for a modern era. His blues draws on the masters but emerges as a unique styling of blues-rock that calls to mind the best of Johnny Winter, Cream, Hendrix. This is the real deal, merging the best of what blues and rock have to offer, and coming out with a result that gives us something new. Rondini and crew have something to say, and if you love guitar-centered blues-rock, you should give this a listen.

It’s obvious that Tony Rondini loves the blues, and it shines through on “No Use For The Blues” in a big way. He succeeds where many of his peers fail, successfully elevating these compositions beyond standard, cookie-cutter blues fare. If I could relate Tony’s brand of blooze to brands of booze, his stuff would be like Johnny Walker Blue....it’s got that familiar taste you know and love, but with a level of sophistication and refinement beyond the reach of most of his contemporaries. The arrangements are rich and deep, echoing the nuance of a Robert Cray, but with a jacked-up energy level reminiscent of the late, great Luther Allison. These descriptions are meant as a sincere compliment; it is rare that a white man possesses the requisite heart and soul needed to deliver these songs in the tradition of a bona-fide bluesman, which he does. Now that’s special. So if you like your blues sweet and hot, Tony Rondini is your man. You’ll love the taste.
