Following on from 2010’s Rare Tracks collection, From The Vaults is the second release from the Blindside Blues Band to gather together a few of the outfit’s little nuggets that could have otherwise slipped through the cracks. Hence, across 11 tracks and over 60 minutes of music, the hard rocking blues masters serve up a selection of covers, live cuts, jams and leftovers that will, no doubt, satisfy curious fans of the veteran band.

Of those 11 songs on show, six are composed by the outfit’s mainman, Mike Onesko, the guitarist and singer illustrating once more that’s he’s also an inspired and varied song writer. The album opens with a prime example, as a Bonham-esque thunder of kick drum and snare explodes things into life; “Poison” being inflected with an American take on Zeppelin’s classic, killer, scene creating sound. The self explanatory “Working Till I Die” follows, the blue collar sentiments heartfelt and honest as Onesko howls out this working man tale and punishes his fretboard in the process. Changing things up “Blue Galaxy” adds a dreamy mid-paced atmosphere to the bluesy framework, while the album closing “Time Fades Away” positively drips with emotion and poise. The considered yet flowing guitar work an absolute joy to behold, even as its undoubtedly melancholy stories unfold. The other two Onesko penned numbers show up in the shape of the live take on the BBB track “Renegade”, before the live in the studio “Bluesion Jam” arguably proves to be the highlight of the whole album. Running to nearly 15 minutes in length, this is a master class of heavy, hard hitting blues styles and searing solos which also leave enough room to incorporate some stellar bass and drum contributions.

Which of course leaves five cover versions for the BBB to get their teeth into, a stunning take on the Montrose classic (although arguably it’s the Iron Maiden version that’s best known) “I Got The Fire” possibly being the pick of the bunch. That’s not to say of course that Cream’s “White Room” doesn’t hit the spot, or that the bone crushing run through of Mountain’s “Never In My Life”, which also features a bar or two of “Nantucket Sleigh Ride”, aren’t thoroughly captivating, because they certainly are. Add in a couple of lesser known cuts in the shape of “New York City Streets” by the Dutch band Bodine (who have links with Arjen Lucassen) and “Warning” by The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation and there’s no denying the breadth of ground covered.

In all honesty, put the name Blindside Blues Band on the cover of a CD and you can pretty much guarantee top rocking entertainment. By it’s very nature, From The Vaults may not be the most obvious starting point for anyone to begin their journey into the world of the triple-B, but for those already converted to the cause, this album will be a required purchase.

“Mike Onesko does it again. His unique voice (on both guitar and vocals) pleasingly haunts us on yet another excellent blues-rock CD: Here we find rare original gems from the vaults, with assorted players on bass and drums, et. al., and a judicious selection of covers, including tunes by Cream, Mountain, Black Sabbath, and Montrose. And no one can do this like Onesko: He has an authenticity that would be the envy of the masters, with chops that would make them each go back to their teachers to learn the things they missed. My personal favorite is a well-thought out cover of Mountain’s ‘Never in My Life,’ which develops into an extended jam and medley of other Mountain tunes, showing that Onesko is not so interested in merely mimicking earlier versions, but in engaging his considerable interpretive skills. In fact, that might be considered his forte: He takes what came before and adds his own flourish, making it even better than what it was. A must listen!”

Mike Onesko is the frontman of, among others, the Blindside Blues Band. Onesko is a relatively unknown guitarist in Europe. He was programmed for RockPalast in 2009, this was not possible at the time but in Bonn in 2011. Besides working with Martin J. Andersen (Blindstone), Onesko is also working on several other projects, including The Big Electric Cream Jam and Mike Onesko's Guitar Army.

When Mike Onesko was seventeen, he pulls with his guitar and with only $60, while hitchhiking from Fairview Park, Ohio to San Francisco. There he plays first in a power trio Sundog and later with Steelwind, a five-piece band, with John Warmouth (drums). His next band is called The Kwik & The Army.

Mike, who performs a lot in the clubs in Marin County California, is discovered by Mike Varney, the boss of Shrapnel Records. Together they set up the Blindside Blues Band. The other members were Scott Johnson (guitar), Jeff Martin (drums) and Greg Chaisson (bass). They release three albums in this line-up. The latest Shrapnel line-up of the Blindside Blues Band was Mike Onesko, Mike Varney, Aysnley Dunbar and James Lomenzo. Mike participated in the Cream tribute album 'Cream of The Crop' (including Pat Travers, Leslie West Tim Bogert, Rick Derrigner, Glenn Hughes & Neal Schon).

After Shrapnel, Mike signed with the Italian label Comet Records, where he releases several albums as' Live At The Torrita Blues Festival '[2002],' Smokehouse Sessions' [2004], 'Guitar Army' [2005] and two Hendrix ' tributes: 'Voodoo Crossing: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix' [2003] and 'Gypsy Blood: Tribute to Jimi Hendrix Vol. 2 '[2005]. Mike then signed with Grooveyard Records. Onesko's latest Grooveyard album is called 'From the Vaults'.

'From the Vaults' is a collection of six (some live and) unreleased original songs: "Poison" - "Working Till I Die", "Renegade (Live)", "Blue Galaxy", "Bluesion Jam (Live in the Studio) & "Time Fades Away". The disc also features and covers of Mountain, Black Sabbath, Montrose, Bodine & Cream. Guitar rock is the red thread through all Onesko's songs. Often heavy rock blues with sparkling guitar work. Curious about what else is in their basement!
