Taking time off from his day gig as guitarist with Danish blue rock trio Blindstone, Martin J. Andersen plugs in with his first ever solo record. Six String Renegade sees the 40-year old riffmaster extraordinaire playing guitar, bass and keyboards assisted by Meridian drummer Klaus Agerbo. From the cascading notes of “The Fire Burns Within” to the swagger of “Dirty Little Angel” and the groove of “Funky State of Mind”, Andersen focuses on having fun. You can hear it in his playing as he literally flies across the frets with visceral pleasure. A true, legitimate guitar hero, Andersen balances his tone and feeling with mood and vibe. Title track “Six String Renegade” is a blaze with distorted notes and heart-pounding action. Andersen’s vocal prowess is honest and made for rock ‘n’ roll - telling a lyrical story with punch and passion. Balancing groove and wah wah “Never Ending Climb” shines as one of his best compositions. Laying down plenty of heavy function with skillful playing, the track smokes with chugging drive.

Some of the truly enjoyable moments of the CD are Andersen’s interpretation of Frank Marino’s “Strange Dreams” (Juggernaut, 1982) and Johnny Winters “Stranger” (John Dawson Winter III, 1974). The guitarist pays tribute with reverence and respect, finding the soul of the song and creating his own beautiful signature. His attention to detail includes a musical flashback that keeps the songs firmly rooted in their era without being overshadowed by modern polish. A surprise attack was the reworking of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”. Layered guitars, thunderous bass and drum and the six-string vocal treatment is a hair-raiser. This one called for a steady set of repeats, each time getting louder and louder. “Freak Flag Flying” is a nod to the late sixties with plenty of Hendrix-stylings while the ten-minute opus “Anthem for Humanity” brought in several guest guitarists (including Soren Andersen, Torben Enevoldsen and Michael Denner) for a cosmic romp through one of Andersen’s more complex compositions. Take time to appreciate the disc’s incredible art work courtesy of Nyxian:Drift.

First solo work of Blindstone mastermind -

At work motivation, it seems Martin J. Andersen is not lacking any requests to guest contributions and collaborations. Nevertheless, the Danish guitarist has found the time to realize his first solo album, which is basically not so terribly distant from the Blindstone Signature Sound, which would easily be good, but was ultimately not to be expected.

"Six String Renegade" puts the focus even more strongly on the guitar work of the mastermind. The material is still compact and strongly composed, however, Andersen may let off steam even more intensively on the six strings. Just over half of the new songs are purely instrumental, which offers an opportunity to go into something more playful. The improvisations that we heard on the first live Blindstone CD are here an integral part of the songwriting and especially in songs like 'Freak Flag Flying' and 'Anthem For Humanity' very pleasant contemporaries. The interpretation of the Maiden classic 'The Trooper' deserves applause because Andersen here creates a dirty rocking instrumental history that preserves the character of the original, but still enters new musical territory.

No less tidy are the compositions in which the trades arise behind the mike. Johnny Winters' 'Stranger' is a hit, 'Dirty Little Angel' a very casual groovy hard rock number with contemporary, comfortable embossing, and with 'Never Ending Climb' shows that Andersen can also quickly get to the point. Blindstone fans will find it accessible and to all newcomers it should be said that this Dane has massive talent that he truly focuses here. "Six String Renegade" is simply cool!

Having recently been grooved to within an inch of my life by the new Blindstone CD, Live In Denmark, the next logical move was to check out Six String Renegade from Blindstone mainman Martin J. Andersen. Two Flying V's, crossed as though they're broadswords on the cover leave no doubt that we're in for a serious six string assault here and Andersen doesn't disappoint as he proves his (tasteful) prowess on not only guitar, but bass, keyboards and vocals. Aided by drummer Klaus Agerbo "The Fire Burns Within" sets the scene, a Satriani like lead line backed by something far funkier than The Satch offers up these days; the groove running deep as the soaring lead lines say more than words ever could. However with the album's title track, Andersen's voice also gets a chance to shine, his rich, deep tones the perfect accompaniment to a staccato riff and funked up vibe. Blindstone four-string expert Jesper Bunk shows up to slap the living daylights out of his bass on the superb "Funky State Of Mind" - and with a name like that, you don't need me to tell you what it sounds like! Although I will add that this track wouldn't have been out of place on the hugely underrated Beautiful Mess album by Jeff Scott Soto. An instrumental cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper", while good fun, illustrates why Steve Harris and the boys have been untouchable for so many years, the power of the original lost without Bruce Dickinson's unmistakable voice. Andersen does do a good job of evoking both the fretboard fireworks and the vocal melody through his guitar, while guest bassist Peter Bruun adds some serious bottom end, however in terms of cover versions we're in much more interesting territory with the Frank Marino penned "Strange Dreams". Here an irresistible keyboard line underpins a chunky funky riff and Andersen's stunning voice to provide my own personal high point on an album which provides many. A little "star power" arrives for the album closing "Anthem For Humanity", where Andersen trades solos with the Fate pair Torben Enevoldsen (also of Acacia Avenue and Fatal Force) and Michael Denner (ex-of Mercyful Fate) and Soren Andersen (Glenn Hughes) on a poignant track which walks the line between introspective and exuberant with quite stupendous ease.

If you've sampled MJA's work in the ever excellent Blindstone, then you'll already know to expect crafted songs, passionate performances and scintillating guitar work on anything this man puts his hand to. If you haven't encountered Martin J. Andersen before, then I'm honoured to introduce you to the Six String Renegade; you're in for a hell of a ride.

Martin Andersen may not be a household name, but if you’re a fan of the Danish dynamite band Blindstone – you KNOW who HE is! Martin is an outstanding heavy, bluesy guitarist and an awesome bluesy singer, and now he gets the chance to shine on his own. Here he also plays bass and keyboards, while Klaus Agerbo handles the drums. Well, don’t expect a pop, metal or jazz album. When Martin goes solo, you will make no mistake he is the driving force behind Blindstone. He’s always had a cool funky touch that makes me think of Frank Marino. Well, he keeps on nurturing it here as well, but he also stretches out with some nice instrumentals. One, which I must comment on initially, is the highly surprising “The Trooper”, originally by Iron Maiden. Martin really puts his own spin on this one making it a cool instrumental hard rocker! There is also some more classic bluesy stuff here such as “Dirty Little Angel” and Johnny Winter’s “Stranger”. Another, not as far fetched, cover is “Strange Dreams” by Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. A perfect fit indeed and a killer version! Despite being perfectly in Martin’s wheelhouse, he does put his own spin on it, especially when it comes to the extra spicy guitar tone. “Never Ending Climb” keeps the heavy, funky vibe going and this one is closer to the house of Blindstone, but it also has a different melodic quality added to it. “Freak Flag Flying” really gets the Hendrix mojo going and “Funky State Of Mind” is what it sounds like. Funk rock with a nod to the old school of Parliament and Funkadelic. The album ends with the ten minute instrumental guitar orgasm featuring guest benders Michael Denner, Torben Enevoldsen and Soren Andersen. This track really builds up like a movie, starting all cool and melodic with a bit of drama coming in after a while. Halfway in the real guitar drama begins with one solo leading into another. A great album, giving Blindstone fans yet another bite to chew and the opportunity to discover the Danish guitar gems. Highly recommended!

Martin J. Andersen's first solo disc, "Six String Renegade" is a knock-it-out-of-the-park extravaganza that puts almost all other guitar records to shame. A best-played-loud, blues-based rock CD, each track has to be heard to be believed. He and his band shine most brightly on a Frank Marino cover, "Strange Dreams" and on Johnny Winter's "Stranger", which he reinterprets as an instrumental offering to the albino guitar god. But, in point of fact, all of the songs on this disc are to die for, and Andersen is a guitar wonder, plain and simple, who plays as well, that is, with as much virtuosity, originality and feeling as any of the masters from days of yore. Although he has numerous guests on this CD, such as Michael Denner, Torben Enevoldsen, and Soren Andersen, it is he who shines above all others, with an obvious musical superiority and signature guitar style that would be the envy of any musician. Guitarists beware -- Martin J. Andersen is here to stay!

The highly anticipated debut release, 'Six String Renegade' from Danish guitarist/vocalist, Martin J. Andersen is a guitar aficionado's wet dream! Best recognized with his work as the founder of the blues rock trio juggernaut, Blindstone. It is amazingly shameful that this guy has not been heard of or has not been mentioned as one of the greats. Backing up Martin are, Peter Bruun and Jesper Bunk on bass and Klaus Agerbo on drums. 'Six String Renegade' is a stylistic gumbo of modern influences and bluesy rock with guitar for days. This album blew me away! Just when I'd catch my breath between songs Martin starts wailing into more riffs and wails than I can remember. String bending of the highest order! Solos up the ying yang with soulful vocals throughout. The songs are strong, well written, well produced. "The Fire Burns Within", sets things off big time! The in your face guitar soloing and riffing tip you off to something fresh and explosive. As he puts on display on the next two tracks, "Six String Renegade" and the smokin' "Dirty Little Angel". Martin's guitar playing is phenomenal with the feel and tone of Hendrix and SRV. His own style, in other words. The first of three covers comes in the form of a killer take on the Frank Marino classic, "Strange Dreams". Then there is a balls to the wall instrumental take of the Iron Maiden rocker, "The Trooper", this track smokes from start to finish! The third cover is a smokin' version of, "Stranger", the heartfelt bluesy mover penned by Johnny Winter (R.I.P.) Ten tracks total, each one guaranteed to raise the hair on the back of your neck! Fierce musicianship, and epic song writing. 'Six String Renegade' should be a part of everyone who appreciates Blues Rock and fine guitar playing with chops to spare. - Highly Recommended

Today was the first spin of this GEM on the Grooveyard Records Label, from Martin Jepsen Andersen This is a SUPERB ALBUM from a man who can REALLY play that six string and has the voice to go with it as well. I know Frank Marino is one of Martins biggest influences and his version of Frank's "Strange Dreams" is simply sensational and again, done with so much respect. Martin also lays down a brilliant instrumental cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" and also gets a big thumbs up for his take on Johnny Winter's "Stranger" This really is a fantastic album and the final track on the album "Anthem For Humanity" is simply EPIC !! An instrumental masterpiece of serious Guitar playing talent from Martin & some other amazing six stringers in Michael Denner, Torben Enevoldsen & Soren Andersen !! BIG THUMBS UP from me !! GREAT STUFF, Martin !!
